So you call yourself an artist?!
It can be kind of scary to call yourself an artist. When you create art, whether you are painting, drawing, doodling, crafting, sculpting, etc., it comes from the heart. It can total freak you out to actually call yourself an artist - yet it it so important that you honour your Soul's yearning to be an artist.
When it comes to being brave enough to call yourself an artist, mindset is everything. I have spent many years working on myself. There is always that little voice in your head that tells you that you aren't good enough. It can be tough to silence that inner critic.
I have always loved art. As a child I used to watch my dad paint and I would try to learn from him as he mixed the oils on his palette. He was great at watercolour too - something which I have only recently got to grips with myself. He was always reluctant to call himself an artist. He painted as a hobby and usually gave his paintings away to friends and family.
I lost touch with art in my teens and early adult life but when I picked up the paintbrush again a few years ago, I knew I wanted to be an artist. However, I had to work on my mindset before I could even consider calling myself that!
There is such pressure on artists. Your work is often deeply personal and it is hard to hear people criticise it. I don't know about you, but there is always the fear of someone laughing at your work. But, over time I have come to realise that those who don't like my work are simply not my audience. Art is subjective - everyone has their own likes and dislikes.
I am still finding my feet as an emerging artist. Still looking for my voice. I think it is important to allow yourself time to practice and play with art. It is good to use new materials and different mediums. Recently I began to use watercolour after only using oils for years. Now I absolutely adore them and it has opened a whole new world of creativity for me.
I am trying to call myself an artist more and more. When someone asks what I do I now say I am a business owner and artist. For those who don't know, I am a business owner as well as an artist. I have a wellness business called Rocks n Rituals and this has really helped me with my mindset. I have learned to listen to my needs and to honour the voice of my Soul.
Never let anyone stop you from living your dream - you can do whatever you set your mind to!
